Supervillain

Daniel Dumile never performed as himself. He built a mythology instead — MF DOOM, the supervillain, the man behind the mask. And then, famously, behind the mask was sometimes someone else entirely.  Imposters and the haters created DOOM. It was Dumile the whole time.  The mask was the point.

The gold and silver split in this painting is intentional. It represents the divided persona at the core of DOOM's identity — the public face and the private man, the character and the artist, the mask worn on stage and the different masks Dumile wore throughout his career. Two halves that never quite resolved into one.

The texture on this canvas is substantial — built up thick, layered, physical. DOOM's legacy has that same quality: the more you look, the more there is.
