Manure I & II

Manure I & II is a diptych by Mathew Humphries — two mixed media paintings on wood panel that reward the eye the longer you look. Each panel contains approximately 18,000 individually placed stipple dots, hand-drawn in the tradition of pointillism, that build the color field from the ground up. Up close, it's a meditation in mark-making. From a distance, the colors resolve into something almost photographic — rich, saturated, and alive.

The subject is botanical: bold flowers in a delightful purple hue rise on green and yellow stalks against a layered red and blue background — colors that shouldn't work together but absolutely do. The stipple foundation gives each tone a luminous, vibrating quality that flat paint simply can't achieve.

Displayed together, the two panels form a single unified composition. Displayed apart, each holds its own.
